5 Self-Care Ideas That You can Do Outdoors
Geraldine Mills
These days, we see more and more people paying attention to their self-care routine. That's because it reminds us to take a rest and recharge.
As they say, you cannot pour from an empty cup.
However, self-care is not limited to taking dipping in the bath, going to the salon, or sleeping in. Sometimes, self-care is communing with nature.
If you are the kind of person who likes to spend time outdoors, we have listed down six self-care activities you can do outside.
Meditating
It has been well documented how meditation can improve our well-being. But doing it outdoors adds another dimension to your mindfulness practice. That's because nature has a way of encouraging us to focus.
In fact, meditating outdoors can help you reap the following benefits:
Strengthened Mind-Body Connection
A relaxed mind and body heighten our sense of mindful awareness. So much so that we become more aware of our posture and balance.
Relieved Stress and Depression
Meditation has long been considered an effective way to ease anxiety, stress, and depression. That's because it allows us to step back from intense negative emotions to manage them.
Regulated Blood Pressure
Aside from our emotions, it is also believed that meditating in nature improves our cardiovascular health. That's because meditation allows us to relax. Meanwhile, being in the presence of nature decreases stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.

Improved Concentration
Daily stimulation and stressors can jeopardize your ability to focus. But with the help of meditation, you can re-energize yourself, allowing you to have mental clarity.
Hiking
While the COVID-19 pandemic has kept us from hanging out with friends or going to their gym, there is still one thing that we can do outdoors. And that's hiking.
For one, hiking allows you to have a rigorous workout. Second, it will enable you to commune with nature, which can be therapeutic. It is also an excellent opportunity for you to inhale fresh air and change the environment without risking your health.
Just remember that you have the right hiking gear. This includes proper clothing and footwear, food and water, a navigational device, and your trekking poles.
Gardening
Gardening became famous following the pandemic. In the US alone, more than half of American adults (55%) are gardening or taking care of their lawn during the outbreak.
The reason for doing so varies. Some wanted to have something to pre-occupy them. Some find gardening stress-relieving. Other reasons are having a sense of accomplishment and wanting to have access to fresh food.
However, gardening gives us the excuse to spend time outdoors, even if it is just within our lawn.
Moreover, a study published in the Journal of Evolutionary Psychology revealed the correlation between happiness and improved mood and flowers' presence. According to the study, the visual and physical stimuli of being in a garden increases the production of feel-good hormones, like dopamine and serotonin.
Going on a Picnic
If you have the space but not the garden, consider going on a picnic on your lawn. Here's why it is right for you and your family:
- Cost-effective socialization. Going on a picnic allows you to spend time with your loved one without breaking the bank.
- Quality family time. Going on a picnic is also a great way to make up for some lost time, giving chances for family attachment.
- Commune with nature. If you can't go on hiking, having a picnic is a great way to be one with nature.
There is joy in spending time with your family at home. But going on a picnic with them on your lawn is a whole new level.
Watch the Sun Rise or Set
Depending on where you are located, watching the sunrise or sunset might be the closest thing you can do as far as outdoor activities are concerned.
For one, it allows you to let the natural light in, which can help boost your mood. On the other hand, watching the sunset provides you with a great time for self-reflection. That way, you can sleep with a grateful heart.
Plenty of self-care tips are available on the Internet. But we believe that spending time with nature is the best that you can do. That's because it allows you to connect with the earth, breathe fresh air, listen to your inner voice, and spend time with yourself.
