Healthy Habits For Women: Summer Edition

Healthy Habits For Women: Summer Edition

Many of us look forward to the summer months all year round. Whether you’re looking forward to getting outside, swimming, or more exercise, many women tend to get caught up in the busyness that summer brings. Ultimately, we end up putting our healthy summer plans on the back burner, and before we know it, find ourselves at summer parties or lounging in the air conditioning. While summer can be the busiest time of the year, it’s important to prioritize yourself and your health during these warm months.

Fortunately for you, we’ve created this list of healthy habits just for you. While there are many more ways you can take a step in the right direction for your health, these are some of the most essential ways you can get the most out of your health this summer.

PUT YOUR SHOES ON AND GO OUTSIDE

When we get home from work, there’s no better feeling than changing out of your work clothes, taking off your bra, grabbing a cold beverage, and kicking your feet up to indulge in some TV. If you find yourself falling into this routine, it’s time to make a change. Instead, we suggest you find an activity outside that you enjoy just as much as your TV show. Walking to a local coffee shop with your girlfriends, upkeeping your garden, or taking your furry friends to a local park are just a few of our favorites. The important part is that you’re getting outside. Vitamin D has numerous benefits for women, especially if you’re pregnant. By adding it to your routine, you’re taking a step towards decreasing depression, as absorbing the vitamin from the sun elevates your mood and boosts your immune system. Those are just a few of the ways your body benefits from that amazing sunshine.

It’s important to keep in mind that getting outside doesn’t have to mean performing long and strenuous activities; after all, you’re usually participating in these at the end of your work day so we understand if you don’t have the energy to run 10 miles in the blistering sun. What is important is making some small changes to your daily routine during these glorious summer months that can benefit you and your health year-round. Now, we aren’t saying you can’t enjoy some of your favorite shows a couple of times a week, we’re just trying to help you find and maintain a healthy balance.

MAINTAIN YOUR APPOINTMENTS

Whether you’re a mom or not, putting yourself first can be quite a challenging task. Especially during these summer months when every weekend is full of parties for friends and family and everyone’s making nonstop plans, it can be hard to take a step back and put yourself first for a change. We promise that your loved ones will forgive you if you can’t make it to a couple of get-togethers. Understand that you deserve good health just as much as the next person does. Now, you might be asking yourself, “what does putting my health first look like?”

For starters, maintenance is a good place to begin. Even though you should be maintaining your health all year, it’s okay if you’ve put yourself on the back burner. We’re here to remind you that now’s the time to put yourself first! Utilize the summer season to take care of all of your health appointments; such as seeing your primary care physician, optometrist, dentist, dermatologist, and gynecologist. Odds are you’re due for seeing at least one of them. Take that first step and schedule your appointment now. If you have a hard time remembering when your appointment is or even taking the initial step to schedule it, try out Zocdoc. No matter what part of the process you’re struggling with, you can move forward from the comfort of your home and be reminded when you have upcoming appointments. Remember, you can do all the healthy activities under the sun but, if you don’t maintain your health screenings, you may be putting yourself in harm's way without even knowing it.

GET AHEAD OF YOUR VISION

As mentioned before, summer can be some of the busiest months of the year for you. In addition to weekend get-togethers, this is the time that most ladies plan their trips or vacations. With traveling to some of the most beautiful locations, you want to ensure that your eyes are in the best shape possible. I mean, how else are you going to be able to take in all that beautiful scenery? Keeping your prescription up to date is especially important during these times. With the average American taking only one to three vacations per year, you’ll want to make sure that you can take it all in to carry the memories you make throughout the rest of your life. So, if you’re having issues with your vision now, make a point to address these concerns ahead of time so you start your trip out on the right foot.

And don’t be mistaken, this process doesn’t have to be a drag, either! Updating your prescription or picking out a new pair of women's eyeglasses can be more enjoyable than may you think. Nowadays, there are a variety of frame shapes and colors to choose from, so you’re guaranteed to not only step up your vision but your style as well. Doing this before you leave will help you take in all that your vacation has to offer without hindering any of the experiences you have in store.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SEASONAL PRODUCE

It’s no secret that the food you put in your body has a direct connection to the way you feel and operate. During the summer months, it’s especially easy to take full advantage of good, healthy food. With multiple sources, from farmer’s markets to fresh produce stands on the side of the road, summer makes it easy to improve your nutrition. Eating an adequate amount of veggies and fruits helps you stay on track with your nutrition goals, while also supporting small businesses and farmers. Not to mention, you could even land yourself a new friendship while at the market. Local farmer’s markets specifically can be very popular in towns large and small. With that being said, lots of people tend to show up at these events, so try it out yourself! You may leave with some freshly picked tomatoes and a new best friend.
